June 30 - July 3, 2014
Our week in Homer has passed by right in front of our eyes. We have enjoyed the
Oceanview RV Park and the
view it furnished.
We have spent the week just hanging out!
We have had a great time walking the
streets and shopping in the local gift stores.
There was lunch at Two Sisters Bakery and dinner at A.J.'s Steakhouse with entertainment by
Hobo Jim. His show in song told a story of Alaska. What a great dinner and show.
The guys went fishing in the bay...and yes, they brought home King Salmon and it is now stored safely in the freezer for future dining.
The time we spent this week on The Spit has been amazing watching the tides come and go as the mighty
eagles flew overhead while we were taking time to
smell the flowers and shop at the local
farmer's markets.
Hanging out in Homer has given us time for strolling along the sidewalks finding great photo opts of
the beautiful Lupines, old boats and
mountains that meet the sea.
But, nothing in Homer compared to the
float plane trip we took tonight.
Along with Bob, Molly, Rich and Mary,
Mark and I, settled into our seats for a great evening of sightseeing!
Our
pilot took off from
Beluga Lake while Wallace
took pictures of our departure.
Finally in the
air...we
left the shoreline of Homer and our RV Park behind us and headed out across
Kachemak Bay.
We flew over
small islands and coves, but none compared to the beautiful
Halibut Cove.
Halibut Cove evolved from a lively fishing village with Herring salteries to the present day community. It is the home of unique artists and galleries connected by a boardwalk. Residents and visitors alike must take the ferry to and from Homer.
Our pilot flew on, and soon we caught our first glimpse
of the Grewingk Glacier.
We flew
closer and closer until we were
right over it.
That is when our pilot turned and flew out over the lake,
landed, and took us in for an
up close look.
Once we were back in the air, the
glacier behind us, we flew over
a couple of small lakes before heading back across the
bay.
We flew down the Homer
coastline and
arrived safely back on Beluga Lake.
What a great way to hang out in,
around, and over Homer, Alaska!
wow!
